What happened in Rage?

The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland created by an asteroid strike. It is based on the actual asteroid 99942 Apophis which will pass Earth in 2036. Rage’s story begins in December 2029 when an asteroid strikes and the survivors are forced into starting a new civilization.
